How to Brew Chemex Pour Over Coffee Like a Pro
Chemex pour over coffee is an elegant and delicious way to brew coffee. If you're new to Chemex, it might seem a little intimidating at first, but don't worry! With a few tips and tricks, you'll be brewing like a pro in no time.
What You'll Need
Before we dive into the brewing process, let's talk about the tools and ingredients you'll need:
- Chemex brewer and filters
- Gooseneck kettle
- Medium-coarse coffee grounds
- Scale
- Timer
- Water
Step 1: Heat Your Water
The first step in brewing Chemex coffee is to heat your water. You'll want to heat your water to around 200°F, so if you don't have a temperature-controlled kettle, bring your water to a boil and let it cool for a minute or two.
Step 2: Preheat Your Chemex
While your water is boiling, preheat your Chemex by rinsing the filter with hot water. This will remove any papery taste and warm up the brewer. Discard the rinse water.
Step 3: Weigh and Grind Your Coffee
Weigh out 25 grams of medium-coarse coffee grounds for every 400 grams of water. Grind your coffee to a medium-coarse consistency, similar to sea salt.
Step 4: Add Your Coffee
Place your Chemex on the scale and add your coffee grounds. Make sure the bed of coffee is level and centered.
Step 5: Bloom Your Coffee
Saturate your coffee grounds with hot water, making sure to cover all the grounds. Let the coffee "bloom" for 30 seconds. This allows the coffee to release carbon dioxide, which can give your coffee a bitter taste.
Step 6: Pour Your Water
Starting from the center of the coffee bed, pour hot water in a circular motion until the water level is about halfway up the side of the brewer. Let the coffee drip through the filter for about 30 seconds.
Step 7: Pour Again
Pour more hot water in a circular motion, starting from the center and working your way out. Make sure to pour slowly and steadily, and keep the water level about halfway up the side of the brewer. Repeat this process until you've poured all of your water.
Step 8: Enjoy Your Coffee
Once all the water has dripped through the filter, remove the filter and discard the grounds. Pour your coffee into your favorite mug and enjoy!
Final Thoughts
Brewing Chemex pour over coffee takes a little practice, but once you get the hang of it, you'll have a delicious cup of coffee that's worth the effort. Remember to use fresh coffee, a clean Chemex, and to pour slowly and steadily. Happy brewing!
